Maha mrityunjaya mantra — Maha mrityunjaya mantra is a life-giving mantra, life-saving mantra and life protecting mantra. This is the most important mantra of Veda mentioned in Yajurveda in its “Rudra” chapter. It can give you victory over death too.

Origen of Maha mrityunjaya mantra

Rishi MARKANDEYA is the originator of the Maha mrityunjaya mantra. Once, there was a saint Mrikandu, the father of Rishi Markandeya. Saint Mrikandu and his wife were very upset due to childlessness. Saint Mrikandu worshipped Lord Shiva. Both the saint and his wife did great austerity for a long time to please Lord Shiva.

After a long time Lord Shiva pleased and blessed them an intelligent son. The son was named Markandeya. On the birth of the son, some of the saints told the Mrikandu that the son is very short-lived. His life is only for 12 years.

Saint Mrikandu and his wife became sad. Saint Mrikandu has full faith in Lord Shiva. After growing his son when asked by the Markandeya the cause of their sadness the saint Mrikandu told his son the cause of their sadness. Saint Mrikandu also told Markandeya to please Lord Shiva to get a blessing for long life. Saint Mrikandu initiated his son by Shiva Mantra.

Markandeya started the recitation of Maha mrityunjaya mantra before a Shivlinga to get the blessing of a long life in order to please his parents. When the death time came messengers of Lord of the Death came there to take the life of Markandeya but could not take his life due to the impact of Shiv Mantra.

After that Lord of death Yamraj himself came to take Markandeya. Seeing him Markandeya wrapped Shivlinga with his hands and surrendered himself to the mercy of Lord Shiva. Lord Yamraj tried to snatch Markandeya from the Shivlinga to take away, but Lord Shiva didn’t allow Yamraj to take away Markandeya and also punished Yamraj.

But on the request of Yamraj Lord Shiva left the Yamraj and blessed the Mrkandeya for long life. Yamraj also promised Lord Shiva that he will not disturb anyone chanting Maha mrityunjaya mantra.

How to chant mahamrityunjaya mantra to fulfill desired wish?

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted after taking a “Sankalp” before a Shivlinga.
The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra should be started during the full moon time “Shuklpaksha” from any Monday of full moon day.
In the morning before sunrise after taking bath visit any Shiva Temple.
Take water in your hand and do Sankalpa verbally or internaly in your mind that you will chant Mahamrityunjaya Mantra in a specific counting to solve your particular problem. This counting you can discuss with any priest present in the temple because it is decided accoring to the problem you wnat to solve.
