What is Kapalbhati Pranayam?

Kapalbhati Pranayama consists of forceful exhalation of breath with your diaphragm and abdominal muscles and after it a slow and passive inhalation. This breathing cycle of vigorous exhalation followed by a passive inhalation is needed to repeat 21 times to more depending on your capability and present health conditions.

Kapalbhati Pranayam Steps

  1. Sit in a comfortable posture either in a Sukhasana, Padmasana or Vajrasana as you feel like.
  2. You can also sit on a chair keeping your feet flat on the floor.
  3. Your back should be straight according to your capability
  4. Rest your hands on your knees facing downward
  5. Inhale through your both the nostrils deeply and comfortably
  6. Press your lower belly with a short burst of a breadth
  7. Repeat step 5, and 6 again at least 21 times or more. In the beginning, you can repeat the cycle 10 times and afterward, you can repeat it more than 10 times as you feel like and your body allows.
  8. When you quickly contract your lower belly, your inhalation will be automatic and passive.
  9. Your main focus should be on exhalation.
  10. After some practice, the exhalation and inhalation will be automatic and smooth.
